Solid Waste Management (SoWAM) ' Even Waste Has It's Place '

What is SoWAM?

SoWAM is a powerful, practical and down-to-earth 'IDEA' introduced by EXNORA to make India a clean, green and flourishing nation. The organization is already responsible in bringing about a big transformation in various parts of India, especially in Tamilnadu and most parts of Chennai city.

SoWAM stands for 'Solid Waste Management.'
So - Stands for Solid
Wa - for Waste
M - for Management

The golden mantra for 'SoWaM' is 'Source Segregation'. The organic waste is composted at various levels at home, street, residential colonies, wards and the inorganic waste is sent for recycling.

We have 86400 seconds in a day. All we need to do is allot just 20 seconds out of 86400 seconds to do 'source segregation', as and when the garbage emanates. Twenty seconds by each person everyday will bring a total clean revolution.

Solid Waste Management VARIOUS LEVELS / 'BRANCH-CONCEPTS'

1.Source (Home, Apartments, Office, School, College, Factory, Temple, Park, Markets, Public Toilets, etc.)
2. Street/Road
3. Residential Campus
4. Residential Colony
5. Municipal Ward
6. Village/Town

The remaining waste, which cannot be dealt with in the above, three levels will be categorized as real/residual/absolute.

Why SoWAM?

"When you can turn it into CASH, why burn TRASH and make it ASH"

Waste is a misplaced resource today and an unrecognized wealth. In India 75% of waste is organic in nature. About 75% people are still employed in the farm sector. If more organic waste were converted as organic manure, it would be more helpful to the farmers. People become healthy by eating organically grown food. Organic Farming does not harm the farm workers, as there are absolutely no health hazards.

Advantages

  • Huge conservation of natural resources
  • Preservation of environment
  • Saving water bodies
  • Improvement in hygiene
  • Protection of people's health
  • Generating self employment opportunities
  • Helping organic farming
  • Reducing consumption of energy, etc.,

What we need to know?

Harmful effects of waste disposal

Solid waste is a serious health hazard Cities are overflowing with garbage generated by 'ALL OF US', causing various types of sicknesses to people. Dustbins are the EATERIES for various animals and birds. Sewer blocks due to solid waste result in mosquito breeding ending in Malaria/Filariasis. The Municipal Corporation workers are exposed to serious health risks.

Causes drinking water pollution

Garbage finds its way to water bodies, water reservoirs, water basins, waterways, water pipelines and water storage sumps and pollutes drinking water.

Burning garbage causes smoke pollution

In desperation and ignorance as well as to reduce its volume, people and local body workers burn accumulated garbage and convert SOLID WASTE as POISONOUS GASEOUS WASTE. Eye blinding smoke can also result in accidents and choking the human lungs

Pollution by littering of PLASTICS

PET bottles and plastic carry bags heaped, piled and dumped on roads, public open space, gutters and everywhere are causing an environmental catastrophe. Animals also eat plastics and die. Plastics are more harmful when they are burnt resulting in toxic fumes and smoke.

Discarded organic waste in open land especially near airports can cause plane accidents

As per the News Paper Reports, garbage dumped in Chennai near Air Port attracts birds and there is the danger of 'BIRD-HIT' for the flying aircrafts
